Davis Cup: Serbia Is In The Semifinals

Novak Djokovic who survived a scary ankle twist during the first set led Serbia to the Davis Cup semi finals with a four sets win over Sam Querrey. World No.1 beat Querrey 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 6-0 in 2:35h, and that was his second point of the weekend for Serbia. In the first match he defeated John Isner.

Serbian team entered the final day with a 2-1 lead after Nenad Zimonjic and Ilija Bozoljac outlasted the No. 1 ranked team of Bob and Mike Bryan yesterday 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-1), 5-7, 4-6, 15-13.

“I am happy I managed to play the whole match,” Djokovic said. “I played really well in the third and fourth set. I am sorry for team USA but it was a thrilling weekend for all of us,” Djokovic said.

Djokovic said he probably wouldn’t have finished the match if it wasn’t a Davis Cup competition.

“I hope I didn’t make it worse,” he said. “If I wasn’t playing for Serbia and didn’t have my team watching me I don’t know if I would have continued.”

It is the second win for Serbia in four years over the 32-time titlist USA. In their only other previous Davis Cup encounter Serbia defeated the Americans in Belgrade in 2010.

Serbia will play against Canada in September’s semifinals.

Djokovic: Playing For Serbia Is Priceless

Best tennis player in the world Novak Djokovic said in Boise in Idaho that none of his individual successes cannot be compared to playing for Serbia and victories he won for the national team.

“Winning Wimbledon or becoming No. 1 in the world is great, but winning the Davis Cup for your country is not comparable to anything else in your career,” Djokovic said. “Rankings really don’t matter in Davis Cup. This is very unique.”

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic will once again lead Serbia into battle having been nominated to play in the World Group quarterfinal against USA on 5-7 April.

The Serbian was the first name on captain Bogdan Obradovic’s list and he will be backed up by Viktor Troicki in singles, who is likely to team up with Nenad Zimonjic in doubles. The fourth member of the Serbian side is No. 338 Ilija Bozoljac.
